‘Design’ an Integral Part of Life
W e are surrounded by the things we use in our daily lives with some sort of design. Design is in everything from the smallest pin to the biggest infrastructure ever made by humans. Every product is designed to serve a purpose.
During my childhood I used to have thoughts that why things are the way they are, take rubber ball, for instance, I used to think why the ball is round why can't it be in any other shape other than round or circular..? why roads are flat, why can't they be weavy? why the houses built above the ground, why aren’t they are made underground..? and many more. But as I grow older I started understanding the science behind it.
Now the question arises.
What is Design..?
A Design is a representation of thoughts coming to reality which serves a purpose and has emotion. A design must be human-centric, simple to use, self-explanatory, and everlasting.
Why anything has to be designed..?
I believe things around us are designed to give us a sense of comfort in our lives. Ever since Human evolution has begun we have been designing things to make our work easy, faster, and effortless.
Now how can anyone decide whether a design is effective? Are there any parameters that tell us about a design is good or bad?
Here are some parameters to illustrate a Good Design
- Good design makes the product Useful.
- Good design is Innovative.
- Good design is Aesthetic.
- Good design is Unubstrucive.
- Good design is long-lasting.
- Good design is simple and as little design as possible.
- Good design is environmentally friendly.
- Good design is self-explanatory.
- Good design is honest.
- Good design through down to the last detail.
by these principles, one can easily identify a design is Good or Bad.
I would like to share some examples which I have experienced to be good or bad.
Example 1. Bad design of ATM Machine
Post pandemic, I happened to go to the ATM to withdraw money with my Dad. After crossing the big queue finally entered the ATM room and encountered this machine. the screen size of this ATM was so small and the background and text color were not contrasting either I was barely able to see the text to interact with the machine which gave me a bad experience.
Example 2. Bad design of The Underpass Road
I came across this road to be very scary, not because I am scared of tunnels but because of the design. Using this underpass during summer and other seasons is good but the real problem starts in the rainy season. Due to improper design in the sewage system, this underpass will be filled with rainwater blocking the way. No doubt it serves the purpose but the design must be universal, it should not restrict the user in any way.
Example 3. Good design of a Personal Diry
This dairy was given to me by my previous company. I personally feel that the design of this dairy to be wonderful because of the rubber strap given to keep it safe and intact. An extra portion is given to hold the pen, and obviously, the page indicator makes it irresistible. This product is the perfect balance of the Design.
Example 4. User Interface of two different phones.
The UI of both phones is different but on the first phone, it is quite convenient to search the apps because it is easily accessible to me even when I am using it single-handed but it is not the same in the second image.
Conclusion:
Designing any product from user's point of view is important. Understanding the user's perspective, in terms of his needs, his experience. Hence design is a Very integral part of life.
